By John Bigelow - Seattle has many great places to run, but the Burke-Gilman trail offers a running trail that goes from the University of Washington all the way to the North end of the lake. The trail is quiet and relatively flat. If you want a five kilometer run or a 20 kilometer run you can work it out on the trail. My favorite run from my home is starting at the University of Washington Horticulture Center located off of Mary Gates Memorial Drive. Park in the center and run through the bird sanctuary towards the University of Washington. As you cross a small foot bridge turn left and head towards the football stadium. As you get close to the stadium, stay on the road that takes you next to Lake Washington and follow it up the hill next to the stadium as it parallels the Lake Washington cut. Hang a right at the top of the hill and run in front of the stadium and take the first pedestrian bridge over to the University of Washington campus. If you are running in the Spring, you will have the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful campuses in America in full bloom. Run all over campus, but make sure you head back to the bridge you came over originally. Once you have gone over the bridge, turn right down some stairs and head down the hill past some tennis courts. Turn right at the bottom of the hill and run back on the same course you came out on through the Horticulture Center. On a clear day you will have some great views of Mount Ranier and Lake Washington.
