Huaráz
The "Muy noble y generosa ciudad de Huaráz" lies in the Rio Santa valley in the natural cradle formed by the mountains of the Cordillera Negra on one side and the spectacular Cordillera Blanca on the other. Due to the altitude (over 3000 meters) you need a period of adjustment when you get there: the very first days in Huaráz it is guaranteed that you will have hard times even climbing a few stairs, let alone running. It is logical then to find out that slow-paced hikers are outnumbering runners 1000 to 1. Huaráz is infact one of the most famous starting point for hikes on the Cordillera Blanca. That does not necessary means you can not run along the same beautiful trails shared by walkers and tourists. One of the best trail is the one that goes to the Mirador de Rataquena. It is a dirt path, approximately one hour walk, that ends on a natural terrace overlooking the city and the mountains. From the Iglesias Soledad (church) go north, turn right on Avenida Confraternidad Inter Este, then left at the "cementerio" (cemetery) along the Rio Seco river: the trail starts there.
