Brussels
For a nice jog, approximately 5 kilometers long, the most beautiful place to start is the Atomium, the huge metallic replica of a molecule with nine atoms was the symbol of the 1958 World Expo. This informal run is complete with palatial scenery, shade, and a gentle hill or two. The Atomium, about 10 minutes from the city center by car, is over 100 metres high. Head northeast on the Avenue de l'Atomium and, after 500 metres, turn right into the Avenue de Madrid. Head straight for roughly 600 metres, then turn right just before the American Theater (also called VTR), home to Belgian TV game shows in the sixties and seventies. Run around the back of this circular building until you reach the fence. Hidden behind the hill lies the Belvédère castle, home of Belgium's Queen and King. Follow the fence until the road turns to asphalt. Go to your left, up the hill on Avenue de la Dynastie. Straight ahead, you will find the Royal Palace of Laeken. The palace has been the home of all Belgian kings until "rebel" Albert II declined. Follow Avenue de la Dynastie to the royal gate and turn right on Avenue de la Parc Royal. After about 150 metres, veer right again on Avenue des Trembles. You will go past the Chapelle Saint-Anne and a spring where you can drink some fresh and pure Belgian water. After quenching your thirst, follow the signs to Château Stuyvenberg, the palace residence of the very pious Queen Fabiola, widow of the late King Baudouin. Keep going straight, making a left on Avenue des Tagèles and a right on boulevard due Centenaire, back to the Atomium.
