Where to run in the world  > Europe  > Belgium  > Brussels

Brussels

On the city's southeast are its great green lungs, the Forêt de Soignes, a marvelous 4000-acres of forest and running paths and the home of wild deer and foxes. This route goes through a part of these huge woodlands. Go by car or take tram 44 to Tervuren, on avenue de Tervuren. Down at the lake, you can park your car. Starting on Keizerinnedreef, make a tour around three lakes. When you turn around to go back on the other side on Spaanse Huisdreef, you will see the semi-ruins of the 16th century Spanish house. Turn left uphill on Blekerijdreef, run past the meteorite at the Zevensterren crossroads, and continue on Olmendreef. Run through the gate, cross the Chausée de Tervuren and follow the steep path that runs parallel with the Isabelladreef, next to the riding school. Go through the wooden archway and keep following the path, called the Royal Promenade, a tour that King Léopold II once took at a more leisurely pace with his mistresses. From there, the path goes through rolling hills until you get to the crossroads at the Kapucijnendreef. Take a right, it is going moderately downhill now. At the end, take a left, following the same path and passing the same gate as before. Follow the left road that leads to the car park. The total distance is approximately 14 kilometers. Do not consider a cooling dip in the lakes - swimming is forbidden. But a refreshing Trappist beer from Westmalle at the drink stand will ease the pain.
