Where to run in the world > Europe > Belgium > Brussels
Brussels
Start at the Grand Place, with its magnificent 17th century Flemish architecture. Exit the Grand Place at its southern end into the rue de la Colline. Cross rue du Marché aux Herbes (watch out for cars) and run through the swank arcade Galerie de la Reine. Resist temptation and go past Godiva, Neuhaus and other shops with those exquisite Belgian chocolates. At the rue d'Arenberg turn right. Before you looms the cathedral of Saint-Michel et Sainte Gudule, a gothic masterpiece of the 14th century. Now comes the hard part, uphill. Run around the right hand side of the church and continue along tiny rue Treuvenberg until it meets rue Royale and turn right. On your left, you will pass the Belgian parliament, and further on, the Parc de Bruxelles, also known as Parc Royal. Ahead, you will see the Royal Palace of Brussels (yes, another one). Run towards the Place Royale, right of the Palace, for the best panoramic view over the city. Head straight, past the Museum of Fine Arts with its collection of Bruegels and Magrittes, on the rue de la Régence, which leads to the impressive Palais de Justice. Before you get there, turn right on rue Brodenbroek, to Place du Grand Sablon, renowned for its antiques shops. Continue to the end of the square and turn right on rue Lebeau and then curve left on rue de l'Hôpital, to Place St. Jean. Turn left onto the rue du Chêne. At the corner with the rue de l'Etuve, you will discover the world's most famous nude toddler: the statue of Manneken Pis. Turn right on rue de l'Etuve and continue until you reach the Grand Place again. The whole loop is approximately 3.5 kilometers. Run without hesitation toward the historic Roy d'Espagne café for a well deserved beer and a great view of the extraordinary Grand Place.
