Frankfurt

This 5k run is ideal in the early morning or mid-evening. Start at Eiserner Steg on the north bank, facing town. Run straight up to the square in front of the Römer, turn right, running along the north side of the Schirn Art Museum with its swank café, and continue past the old town's landmark, the red sandstone cathedral known as the Dom. Go until you can go no further, then turn left into Fahrgasse. Run past the Museum of Modern Art and the remnants of the old town walls (complete with a beer garden featuring Alsatian brews). Head straight to Konstablerwache, the city's main Saturday market square, and continue on Grosse Friedberger Strasse past the nearby Arabella Sheraton Grand Hotel and cross the Bleichstrasse inner-ring road. Turn left into the strip of parkland that circles the old town. After 300 metres, you are at Eschenheimer Turm, home to English-speaking cinemas. Cross Eschersheimer Landstrasse and continue down Hochstrasse to the Hilton Frankfurt, which boasts the Wave health & fitness club. Offering a nicely equipped gym, the club's 25-metre pool looks out over the park and is open to all. Make a sharp left down Börsenstrasse, which leads you past the stock exchange and into the heart of town. Turn right into the Fressgasse, a pedestrian precinct where the chic stroll in the evening, sip refreshing wheat beer in outdoor pubs, and window-shop in boutiques on the side streets. Just a block away, on parallel Goethestrasse, is Frankfurt's Jazzkeller, where internationally renowned trombone player Albert Mangelsdorff often hangs out. At the end of Fressgasse is the huge fountain of the Alte Oper. Turn left back into the narrow park and run through the heart of the banking district. A few steps further, cross Theaterplatz. When you reach the end of the park, you are at the river again: turn left for Eiserner Steg.
